Hectic peppermint : for two pipas and electronics / Damien Ricketson.
Library shelf no. 785.712/RIC 2 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Hectic Peppermint is one in a family of unrelenting games of sonic ping pong played between two instrumentalists trading rapid-fire attacks from either side of the audience. The work echoes traditions that feature interlocking rhythmic patterns - from Gamelan to Flamenco to Aka Pygmy vocal polyphony, rice pounding to chain-gang rhythms, and my former teacher Louis Andriessen's iconic Hoketus for two dueling ensembles. The premiere version, Hectic Peppermint, features two microtonally tuned pipas and was performed by Liu Lu and Professor Zhang Qiang. However, the concept may be executed by any similar sounding spatially separated duo. Each new realisation is tailored to the instruments available and earns a new botanical name in its title.
