Electrofringe 2009
by Julian Day
Electrofringe is one of a number of independent festivals that converge under the banner of This Is Not Art. It's held each spring in Newcastle, the historic coastal mining town two hours north of Sydney, and for four days this otherwise reserved city is overrun by free-thinking artists of all persuasion.
ANAM: Ligeti, Haydn, Dean
by Anthony Lyons
The line of people trying to attend this ANAM concert at the South Melbourne Town Hall extended out the door and into a hot and rain-soaked Melbourne evening. Standing-room-only concerts can be a rare thing, and it is perhaps testament to the continued fortitude and spirit shown by ANAM that a warm, anticipatory and celebratory atmosphere permeated the audience. Alongside György Ligeti’s Cello Concerto and Joseph Haydn’s Symphony no. 82, this concert also witnessed the eagerly awaited Australian premiere of Brett Dean’s Grawemeyer Award-winning violin concerto The Lost Art of Letter Writing.
Stations of Creation
by Phil Vendy
Stations of Creation is an ambitious project by St Ives Uniting Church to adapt the traditional art forms comprising the fourteen Stations of the Cross, a series of paintings and carvings depicting incidents in the passage of Jesus to his crucifixion. The intention is that St Ives can find in this a new way for people to approach Christmas, station by station, using contemporary music as their markers, instead of visual artworks, on a journey through what is involved in creation...
Rosemary Joy - System Building
by Geoffrey Gartner
With the production of Rosemary Joy’s System Building, the wonderfully protean entity that is Aphids has re-affirmed its position as a leading light in new and thought-provoking art. System Buildingis a marvellous installation, starring percussionists Diego Espinosa and Eugene Ughetti. It was created for performance in four specific venues, in Berlin, Groningen in the Netherlands, Melbourne and Sydney. After recent performances in the Salon of the Melbourne Recital Centre it has finally made its way to Sydney for one evening of sold-out shows at Carriageworks. Shows, plural? Yes, each performance is only fifteen minutes long...
Carte Blanche - Ros Bandt and Brigid Burke
by Mark Viggiani
In Sunday’s short concert, Bandt and Burke explored the relationship between the visual and the aural in performance art, with intriguing results. Often it is the music that suffers, taking a subservient or complementary role to the more easily assimilated visual aspects of the work, but this was not necessarily the case at this event. Broadly, these composer/performers make the film an integral aspect part of the compositional process. The visual imagery is organised along quasi-musical lines with regard to structure and dynamics, and is made part of the performance itself through live manipulation of the imagery. Music generates images in the same way that the pictures affect the sounds themselves...
