Work

Hectic Jacaranda : for pipa, guitar and electronics

by Damien Ricketson (2019)

Work Overview

Hectic Jacaranda is one in a family of unrelenting games of sonic ping pong played between two instrumentalists trading rapid-fire attacks from either side of the audience. The work echoes traditions that feature interlocking rhythmic patterns - from Gamelan to Flamenco to Aka Pygmy vocal polyphony, rice-pounding to chain gang rhythms, and my former teacher Louis Andriessen's iconic Hoketus for two dueling ensembles. The premiere version, Hectic Peppermint, featured two microtonally tuned pipas, however, the concept may be executed by any similar sounding spatially separated duo. Additional versions thus far include, Hectic Cinnamon, for percussion and this version, Hectic Jacaranda, for pipa and guitar performed by Liu Lu and Vladimir Gorbach. Each new realisation is tailored to the instruments available and earns a new botanical name in its title.
