Work Overview

Hectic Cinnamon is one in a family of unrelenting games of sonic ping pong played between two instrumentalists trading rapid-fire attacks from either side of the audience. The works echo traditions that feature interlocking rhythmic patterns - from Gamelan to Flamenco to Aka Pygmy vocal polyphony, rice-pounding to chain-gang rhythms, and my former teacher Louis Andriessen's iconic Hoketus for two dueling ensembles. The concept, however, may be realized by any two similar-sounding instruments. Each new work in the series, is uniquely composed with idiomatic pitch content, rhythmic patterns, tempi, electronic backing track and representational system to suit the ensemble and performers at hand.
