Product details

Building on the success of our first two Women of Note albums, ABC Classic is thrilled to be releasing the third volume in our now annual celebration of Australia's female composers.

This digital album, released in time for International Women's Day (8 March), focusses on some of the up-and-coming young composers, including three brand new recordings from the Muses Trio (Hilary Kleinig's exuberant Cockatoos, Leonie Cohen's elegiac Lights Finale and Natalie Williams' passionate Songs of Silent Earth).

Also included are four works commissioned as part of the ABC's Fresh Start project in 2020: a movement from Emma Jayakumar's gorgeous Bell Birds suite; Yuwaalaraay composer Nardi Simpson's First Nations take on the iconic Southern Cross, Of Stars and Birds; three exquisite Songs Without Words by Anne Cawrse; and Elizabeth Sheppard's Kalgoorli Silky Pear, a tribute to the Noongar composer's grandparents in Western Australia, performed on a piano made in 1770 - the same year that Captain Cook set foot on Australia's east coast.

Jessica Wells' The Night Parrot offers a dramatic musical account of the quest to find one of our most elusive and mysterious birds and bring it back from the edge of extinction, while Fiona Loader evokes a delightful soundscape of cheeky birdsong in Lorikeet Corroboree. From Jane Stanley comes an ethereal portrait of the Desert Rose; Caerwen Martin captures the timeless majesty of the heavens in Stars Come Out in a Midnight Sky; and Katia Beaugeais' delicate Like Snowdrops You Will Shine floats in the air like gossamer.

Felicity Wilcox takes the bass clarinet into new sonic territory as she explores the relationships between Western musical language and the cultural traditions of Australia's First Nations peoples. Liza Lim teases out surprising soundworlds from the alto recorder in weaver-of-fictions, a tribute to Eros, the god of desire. And Holly Harrison takes us on a white-knuckle ride with her explosive Flashpoint.

The album also features major works from two iconic Australian composers: Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Sinfonia da Pacifica, a tribute to the rich cultures of Oceania, and from the ever-popular Elena Kats-Chernin, a live concert recording of the premiere performance of The Witching Hour - a concerto for not just one double bass, but eight!
