Work Overview
'Hopeful' is a reflective piece to be played at a medium slow tempo. The centrepiece is a bass register melody played in unison on piano and double bass, with the drummer supporting, playing in rhythmic unison and embellishing. The pianist then introduces a treble register counter melody, and follows with a more tonally abstract version of this, while the double bass player and drummer repeat their original melodic material. The improvisation section is free harmonically and melodically. Players can choose the content except that they should follow the rhythm of the melody phrases.
The piece concludes with a coda. This is a short melody and harmony sequence that is repeated while the double bass player improvises until signalling the final phrase.
