Work Overview
In late 2007, I set off to Italy on an exciting journey to
uncover the music of Baroque composers Carlo and Giovanni
Bonetti, which was originally published in the mid 17th century.
Following a successful journey, I began the process of
transcribing these pieces into modern musical notation. I then
wrote two pieces directly based on two of their pieces. The
original Latin texts from their pieces were used as the basis for
my own pieces,, and I incorporated melodies, harmonies and chord
progressions used by Carlo and Giovanni Bonetti.
Within minutes of embarking on a crude translation of O Quam
Felix Est I was utterly captivated by such gorgeous,
beautiful and joyful text. And so, with a draft transcription
placed upon the piano stand, I began to enter into the musical
world of Giovanni Bonetti. Within minutes, little musical
fragments, cadences, motifs and melodies would leap out the page
and tickle my imagination. I then took these and twisted them
into my own composition.
