Work Overview

Based on real events, Ali's Wedding tells the story of Ali, the affable son of a Muslim Cleric who has migrated to Australia from Iran, and Ali's hilarious attempts to live up to the expectations of his community and his father.

Telling a series of well-intentioned lies, Ali sets off a calamitous chain of events that sees him pretending to be a medical student based on forged exam marks. Amidst the chaos, Ali falls for Dianne, the girl of his dreams, and is engaged to marry Yomna, the girl he has been promised to. As his charade is on the edge of being exposed, Ali's starring role in "The Trial of Saddam Hussein - The Musical" appears to offer the only escape. Or not.

An irreverent and warm-hearted comedy, Ali's Wedding is an affectionate and vivid portrait of Islamic life in Australia, and a poignant story of love and duty.

The screenplay has been written by Andrew Knight and young Iraqi actor/writer Osamah Sami. It's based on Osamah's true life story, and we love it because it addresses the issue of Muslim refugees in Australia in a light-hearted and totally "non-worthy" manner. The political message is all sub-textual.
