Product details
Quito is a documentary music drama about schizophrenia and East Timor by Martin and Peter Wesley-Smith. It concerns the life and death of Francisco Baptista Pires, a young East Timor-born Darwin man who suffered from schizophrenia. He was nicknamed Quito (pronounced "kee-toh"). The kit explores the stage and radio versions of this extraordinary drama using the CD, musical extracts, questions and complete answers for students.
At one level, the story of Francisco Pires is one of personal tragedy: a young man, gentle, loving, and much loved, who is haunted by the demons which eventually destroy him. His brief life, in which he experienced hope and horror, courage and fear, truth and deceit, stands as a metaphor for the tragedy of his homeland, where he spent the first eleven years of his life.
This opera kit is aimed at senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions, and is part of a series on Australian opera. This series fits the syllabus requirements for the study of Australian music.
This product forms part of the following series: Australian Opera Series.
