The two 'Rothko' movements and 'Utopia Parkway' were written and first performed in 1994, while the composer was the Australian Chamber Orchestra's composer in residence. The outer movements were composed in 1999.

Movts 2-4 composed and first performed in 1994. The outer movts composed in 1999 during the composer's time at Peggy Glanville-Hicks House, Paddington, Sydney.
