Event Details

Flinders Quartet’s 2022 subscription concert season opens with the premiere of two new works by Melbourne composers, Katy Abbott and Melody Eötvös. Abbott and Eötvös have both chosen inspiring 20th century creatives as the springboard for their new works, showcasing the lives of Melbourne composer Margaret Sutherland and French Sculpteur Camille Claudel. Joining Flinders Quartet on stage to do the literal singing will be Perth-based mezzo soprano Ashlyn Tymms, a rising star in Australia’s opera scene, bringing to life the words of Sutherland and Claudel in two song cycles that embody the notion of chamber music. To round out the concert program, Jessica Wells has arranged Clara Schumann’s Op. 16 preludes and fugues for string quartet; and Flinders Quartet revisit Margaret Sutherland’s second string quartet entitled “Discussion”, a work that has only received a handful of performances since its completion in 1953, and two of these were by Flinders Quartet in 2022 as part of their mission to perform and record all of Sutherland’s works for string quartet.
