Work Overview
'Melody and Elaboration' is based on a song originally written in 1981 for the production, The Cheated, produced by the One Extra Dance Company, Sydney at the Cleveland Street Performance Space. In Part 1, the melody forms the basis for the movement's form. In Part 2, fragments of the melody are elaborated upon and developed into new textures.

More information about 'Melody and Elaboration' can be found at the following link - https://www.richardvella.net/melody-elaboration-for-harp-and-string
The first movement, 'Melody', is an arrangement of a previously composed song written for a dance theatre production. The second movement, 'Elaboration 1', subtitled Song of Loss, is monodic in form. Here, each phrase of the original song is played by various sections of the orchestra or harp. The third movement, 'Elaboration 2', subtitled Song of Renewal, is a complex transformation in which the original melody adopts a quasi-cantus firmus role. This underpins textural elaborations based on hocket textures, simultaneity, and various contrapuntal techniques.
