Work Overview

Song of Trees was commissioned by the Canberra Centenary in 2012 in conjunction with the opening of the National Arboretum in Canberra.

It features most of the trees that were planted at that time, with around 100 tree species sung in total. One species that is particularly significant to me is the Broad Leaved Peppermint Gum. Almost ten years after writing the piece Ngunnawal friends introduced it to me as a medicine, infusing the leaves as tea. This has been particularly significant to me, and my son and I regularly look out for Peppermint Gums when we are out walking on Ngunnawal country.

Song of Trees has been performed many times in a range of settings. Get in touch if you'd like me to arrange it for a different setting, or feel free to do so yourself!
