Work Overview
Fast Talking: The last words of 'Dutch' Schultz was commissioned by Andy Ford for him to perform as a solo vocal piece. There is no singing in the work - it is made up of various spoken, shouted, cried and other extreme and wide-ranging vocal expostulations. The score is in a graphic format with no conventional music as such - it is a piece of performance art for a virtuosic actor/musician. The text comprises the stenographer's notation of the last works of the gangster Arthur Flegenheimer (aka 'Dutch' Schultz - no known relation of the composer). He was shot in the toilet of the Palace Chop House in Newark in 1935 by underworld hitman, Charley 'The Bug'. The New Jersey police recorded his last words as he lay dying in a hospital bed.
