Work Overview
The following idea which gave rise to the piece was written in the score before composing the music:
"People who kill innocent civilians have been deafened and blinded to life (Eros) before they fire a shot: they have been taught to worship death (Thanatos) and are dead before they kill."
This idea led me to find an analogy in music for this type of negation of life. My solution was to simulate deafness by using the piano 'unnaturally', namely by almost covering the melodic material in the right hand with lots of noise in the bass. The tempo is also generally fast and unrelenting, but later in the piece there is some respite from this with controlled use of silence and a glimpse of a more attractive texture.
