Work Overview

Palomar's Vacation is the first set of compositions in a projected series inspired by Italo Calvino's novel, Mr Palomar.

Mr Palomar, who shares the same name as the world famous Palomar astronomical observatory, is a keen observer of the world. Unfortunately, because of his earnest, almost scientific approach to better understanding the objects and situations that fall under his gaze, he rarely derives complete satisfaction or enjoyment from his observations. More often than not, these experiences lead to intense frustration, anxiety or behaviour and thoughts that are unintentionally comical.

Of all the instruments in the orchestra, the bassoon is probably the one that most looks like a telescope. Given this similarity in appearance and the nature of Mr Palomar, which I can't help but think reminds one a little bit of the bassoon, I thought it worth while trying to capture the musical tone of Calvino's book with this instrument.
