Work Overview

Miriam Hyde wrote the poem, 'Prayer for Rain', on 11 August 1970, while in the Brisbane-Sydney train,
returning from a seminar of the Queensland Music Teachers' Association at which she gave lectures. This stark song for dramatic soprano was written later in the same month (26-28 August). On the score, the composer wrote the following note:
'Though I often have no objection to the transposition of my songs, I feel
that A minor only suits the colour and atmosphere of this one!'
