Work Overview
This work was commissioned by Dr Judith Heale on the occasion of the 65th birthday of her husband, Mr Keith Heale, a keen amateur clarinetist, and I might add, bagpiper of note.
When I began to write the piece, a kind of melancholy highland melody came to me for some reason. When I subsequently learnt that Keith was a keen bagpiper and knew quite a bit about Scottish music, this made sense. The piece was initially called 'Keith's Spree', after the Scottish meaning of a 'lively outing' or 'an unrestrained indulgence in or outburst of an activity'. However after the first performance, it became apparent that the work's atmosphere of highland melancholy and lyrical reflection slightly outweighed the moments of lively, carefree activity. As a result, the work is now more happily called 'Keith's Dream'.
