Work Overview
Sudden Light is a setting of a poem by the 19th century pre-Raphaelite poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The harmonic and melodic language of the work are accessible to good chamber choirs and draws on Gregorian Chant (including the "Lux Aeterna" plainsong) for some of it's melodic material. Given the dichotomy between 'eternal light', the 'sudden light' of realisation, and Arvo Part's belief that "the instant and eternity are struggling within us", the work also subtly references Arvo Part's multi-versioned "Fratres".
