Work Overview

Surface Tension was written for Timothy Kain and premiered by him in March 1999. The title alludes to liquids and the unstable tension of their surface-film. The music begins with an underlying tension, this builds up and then breaks-out in the second half of the piece. Formally the work is in three sections; an opening 'toccata', then a sort of pent-up 'moto perpetuo' that leads to a free 'passacaglia' over a ground bass. The 'ground' is actually the opening passage of the toccata!

— Richard Charlton, June 1999
