Instrumentation: SSA choir, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 2 alto saxophones (or 2 horns in F), 2 trumpets in B flat, 2 trombones, bass trombone, timpani, percussion (2 players), strings.

Duration: 4 min.

Difficulty: Medium — Senior school to tertiary student.

Commission note: Commissioned by Rowena Danziger on the occasion of her retirement from Ascham School, Sydney, after 30 years as headmistress.

The words to A Serious House were chosen by Rowena Danziger and come from the last stanzas of Philip Larkin’s poem, 'Church Going'  published in Collected Poems by Faber and Faber.
