Cycads embody the Northern Territory; they are ancient plants that have survived a harsh environment. My piece is inspired by the fresh green cycads that shoot quickly after the devastation of fire and make a dramatic contrast against the charred earth.
They seem to symbolise the resilience of nature.
I had in my mind a picture of walking through an area of burnt earth that stretches on forever. Around me are cycads sprouting bright green fronds. It makes me reflect on the devastation of fire and all that suffered in its path. It also makes me reflect on the fact that fire has been part of this landscape back through time.
Written as part of 'Fire Dances', a suite for piano trio, collaboratively written by eight Australian women composers, once from each state and territory. The suite was commissioned through the support of a Fresh Start Grant, funded by ABC Classic during 2020.
