Work Overview

Commissioned in 2000 by the principal contrabassist of the MSO, Steve Reeves, Gallopping Goliards is a light-hearted solo work whose alliterative title caught the composer's fancy and takes its inspiration from the anonymous bands of wandering scholars and clerks (goliards) who travelled the roads of Europe in the late middle ages. A wide-ranging sample of their musico-poetic production is the collection known as Carmina Burana. The present piece, however, uses a melody from another source as its basis, Orientis partibus. Also known as The Song of the Ass, it was used in the liturgical drama held in Beauvais cathedral for the scene of Mary's journey on a donkey in the Christmas narrative. Gallopping Goliards is a loose series of variations on this lively melody.
