Work Overview

The Secret Life of the Reef is a musical setting in 4 parts, that describes the A: the Beauty of the Reef, B: The spawning of the Corals, C: 'Cheeky Fish Games, D: 'The morning after the Coral Spawning'.

Each year corals that make up the 3000-kilometre reef, spawn on one night in a beautiful explosion of life. The music firstly describes the 'perfect tropical night' with sonorous peaceful melodies flowing from violin one and two, with occasional 'solo lines' intertwines into the complex tunes. Then it all morphs into a spontaneous, playful dance influenced by 'tango rhythms', with strong polyrhythmic and dialogue, 'chatty' section throughout the whole orchestra. 'Cheeky Fish Games' sees schools of fish darting and dancing amongst the spawn, feeding off the bundles of life ejected by the corals. Then in the finale, the 'Morning after the Coral Spawning', after one crazy exuberant night the coral sinks slowly to the reef to begin a new cycle of life.
