Work Overview
Commissioned in celebration of Beethoven's (COVID-delayed) 250th birthday, Invocations takes inspiration from the opening melody of the Kyrie from Beethoven's Mass in C major (Op. 86). A Kyrie, by nature, is a short repeated invocation. In this piece, Beethoven's opening soprano melody is slowed and re-purposed as a bass line over which a new invocation is heard. This invocation for the present day, initially heard in the piano before being passed into the clarinet and strings, is one of optimism and lightness, an antidotal offering to the events of 2020.
