Work Overview

Night Skies for Guitar consists of In a Close Orbit and When Stars Fall. Both pieces are linked and were inspired by an interest in stars and planetary systems.

In a Close Orbit has as its centre an unchanging bass ostinato - a fixed 'orbit' upon which melodic and rhythmic lines are shifted over and built up in tension. The piece has an inner, emotional dimension represented by the melodic lines and fragments as well as an outer, fixed repetitive one found in the ostinato pattern.

When Stars Fall is the longer of the two pieces. It uses a scordatura tuning and explores a number of colouristic devices. It is built upon a series of related sections that govern the overall form. In many ways the use of harmonics in the piece represent stars, and when harmonics are featured they act as both structural statements and transitionary pillars between the larger sections.
