Work Overview
Sanctuary was composed upon returning to my family home in Hobart following a tumultuous year. 2021 was a year of personal upheaval, compounded by lockdowns and border closures which prevented leaving Sydney for interstate trips. My relief at making it home to my family in time for Christmas was powerful.
Sanctuary is a mediation on home, safe havens, places of refuge in a volatile world. It lasts approximately five minutes in a single movement that attempts to capture a sense of yearning and, ultimately, of tranquillity. Sanctuary was composed for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as part of the 2022-23 Australian Composers' School.
