Work Overview

More (Bulgarian for Sea) is a poem by Bulgarian Australian Marcia Malinova-Anthony about her experiences of alienation as a migrant in this country and the solace she has found in the vastness of the sea, "as in an invisible cosmic womb".

More is part of a 65 minute suite of music Zashto? (Why?) on the subject of Australia's treatment of migrants over the centuries. The other composers are Sandy Evans, Andrew Robson, Tony Gorman, Llew Kiek and Mara Kiek - all current or former members of cross-cultural band Mara!

Work Details

Year: 2022

Instrumentation: 3 female voices (Bulgarian style: soprano, mezzo, alto), alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trombone, tuba, bouzouki, accordion, double bass, percussion/drum kit.

Duration: 8 min.

Difficulty: Advanced — Rhythmic independence, Bulgarian language and vocal technique specialisation.

Commission note: Commissioned by Mara! Big Band with funds provided by Create NSW.. Commissioned for the suite Zashto.

First performance: by Mara! Big Band — 2 Mar 22. Riverside Theatres, Parramatta.

The composer notes the following styles, genres, influences, etc. of this work:
Traditional Bulgarian, jazz, art music, minimalism, third stream.

Expertise in interpreting chord symbols and comping is highly recommended for the bouzouki, accordion and bass players. Expertise in jazz improvisation is highly recommended for at least 2 of the instrumental players.
