Work Overview
Although in a traditional form, in this work I have tried to explore more contemporary or popular rhythms within the structure of the old "sonata movement". The outer movements in particular, are 'jazzy' and syncopated. The first movement should have plenty of "drive" especially in the first subject's ostinato on the piano. The second theme opens-out into a more romantic mood. The slow movement is a 'Nocturne' with some slightly unexpected chord changes in a choral or hymn-like setting. The general mood should be one of stillness and calm. The last movement has a sort of "roller coaster" effect. Although the tempo should be fast it should not blur the rhythmic groupings of 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2.
