Pied Chorale is a work that combines my fascination with Pi and love of choral music. All the notes in Pied Chorale are derived from the mathematical constant Pi [3.1415…] and are sung consecutively up to the 195th decimal point. The digits are sung in order either between the sections of the choir, or by a single part while the rest of the choir sings through a smaller section. The aim is that all digits appear in order. Each number represents a note in the diatonic scale, with 8 and 9 doubling 1 and 2 respectively. 1 is always D, beginning in the Dorian mode.
0 is represented by a whisper, or a rest (during the canon). The word whispered is Sunya (pronounced shoon-yah), the Sanskrit word that represents zero. This word was used because Indian scholars were one of the first to use 0 in mathematics.
