On the Verge - Mind Over Matter is a new Australian education resource that provides a 7-12 approach for the detailed studying of recently composed Australian music. It uses a case-study centric structure combined with a wide range of tasks that enables teachers to develop activities that showcase the variety, interest and unique facets of new Australian music culture.

Issue 1 covers case studies in the musical styles of popular music (Canberra Won’t Be Calling Tonight - Client Liaison), thrash metal (Nuclear Strike on the Vatican - Head in a Jar), chamber duo (Velvet - Kate Moore) and interactive media installation (Psychic Synth - Pia Van Gelder).
On the Verge - Mind Over Matter uses Australian works that are less than 10 years old as case studies for focusing on larger concepts and cultures. Music used in the resource sits at the extremes of genres or styles, capturing students’ ears and encouraging them to explore a wide range of Australian cultures.
The education resource provides information about the artist and the work, as well as in-depth performance, composition and musicological tasks catering to all students with diverse levels of music knowledge and experience.
On the Verge - Mind Over Matter is designed to broaden students’ ideas surrounding Australian musical and arts cultures whilst allowing for the discovery of Australian works and composers through media platforms students use for other purposes. Case-studies extend students’ music knowledge beyond the basics of the elements of music into challenging and engaging areas of music and the arts, fostering immersion in the musical cultures that are occurring around the student.
On the Verge was developed in response to requests and discussions with classroom teachers around Australia. In particular, teachers noted a desire for more practical tasks, and a resource that could cater to various year groups from Year 7 to 12. It was decided, through consultation, that On the Verge would work best as an activity-based education resource, to be used as an always on-hand, photocopiable resource.
About the author
Ciaran Frame is a composer and educator based between Tokyo and Sydney. Having completed his Honours degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Ciaran is passionate about cross-disciplinary collaboration and education, working at the intersection of data, technology and music. As well as teaching privately, Ciaran teaches students from 18 months to 18 years across Australia and Japan. His recent projects have included a regional pilot program of synthesiser workshops for young children, as well as making music out of lichen in the Arctic Circle.
