Sheet Music: ScoreBukovina odyssey : string quartet / Stephen Lalor.by Stephen Lalor (2011)
|
Product details
Bukovina odyssey draws loosely on the string playing traditions of the Bukovina region (north Romania/Ukraine) and Carpathian Mountains. It is in 3 distinct sections: a slower opening in which solos are exchanged over dramatic col legno march rhythms and ethereal harmonics;the 2nd section moves along into a moderate tempo with more exchanges over an ostinato, which builds into a spirited final section recalling gypsy improvisations interwoven with a 4-bar Moldavian folk tune.

First performance by Chanterelle String Quartet at Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players (St James' Church (King Street)) on 23 Feb 2011
Influenced by the string playing traditions of the Bukovina region (north Romania/Ukraine), including the Roma (gypsy) accompanying and improvisational/decorative styles. Uses brief fragment of a Moldavian dance tune towards the end.
The difficulty in this piece lies not in pure technical terms, but in the nuances, sliding, percussive string slaps etc and blending of passages of sul pont with harmonics and bringing it off as an ensemble.
Typeset edition.
