Event Details

This wide-ranging program draws some strands linking traditions from the music of Brahms and the Schoenberg School to contemporary practice in Melbourne. Two large new pieces for solo pianist Michael Kieran Harvey with choir and ensemble have been created by composers Rohan Drape and Neil Kelly, commissioned with support from the Australia Council.

Well-known for their work in the multi-art group Slave Pianos as well as projects in electronics and microtonal music, both composers emerged from the environment of the Music Department created at La Trobe University by the Australian composer Keith Humble over the last quarter of the 20th century.

A late motet by Brahms, a rarely-heard cantata by Webern provide a more distant background to the new works.

Bridging the two eras is the first substantial opus of Keith Humble, the String Trio composed in Paris in 1953 during studies with the Webern pupil René Leibowitz. Humble’s String Trio is published for the first time, in the critical edition of Kim Bastin, and is launched as a score in the Astra Publications series on the occasion of this concert.

Featured non-Australian music: Schoenberg, Webern, Luc Ferrari, Brahms
