Event Details
Come and see the future of Australia's percussion industry. Seven of WA's best young percussionists join world-renowned Tetrafide Percussion for a night full of fun, energy and surprises! Classic percussion works by Reich, Westlake, Pye, Hovhaness and Richter run alongside seven world premiere works for ensemble, plus some plain old silly fun works.
Companion works Omphalo Centric Lecture (Westlake) and Rebana Loops (Pye) will be performed alongside each other for the first time in years, and Tetrafide will perform the world premiere of Calum Braham's Wave Phases. Finally the entire TPYA ensemble will revisit Steve Richter's Funky Flirting With Gravity, written for critically-acclaimed Defying Gravity Ensemble.
In 2011, 11 of the 16 students in the Defying Gravity Ensemble are graduates of TPYA, and other TPYA graduates are found studying at places such as Berkeley and touring with international pop artists. So it is no idle boast that TPYA participants are the future of our music industry. Please come and support this program and be prepared for some fun.
TPYA 2011 has seen the 5th incarnation of our successful Tetrafide Percussion Young Artists Program. The program auditions to find the best young percussion talent in high schools throughout the state, and then runs a series of workshops in performance, techniques and rehearsals across months to give these students access to experiences that simply aren’t possible inside the ‘normal’ school music system. This year we have also continued the incredibly successful composition stream, where participants work on creating their own works for this showcase concert.
Performers: Tetrafide Percussion (Neville Talbot, Joshua Webster, Catherine Betts, Iain Robbie) and the 7 members of this year's Young Artists Program (aged 15-17)
Featured non-Australian music: October Mountain - Alan Hovhaness, Music for Pieces of Wood - Steve Reich, Dance of the Swans, arr. Chris Brooks, Danielle's Cha Cha Cha - Lalo Davila
