Event Details

Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir is delving into the life, loves, music and legacy of one of the world’s greatest ever composers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky lamented his inability to live the life he wanted, both in his letters and his music, so we think he would be thrilled to have a gay choir proudly performing his works. Tchaikovsky’s true heart is in his music, which our choir will bring to you surrounded by the works of his admirers, students and successors. This is choral music at its most haunting and sublime. The concert will also include two contemporary Australian music pieces which similarly address how we find light in the darkness of death and grief - Sarah Hopkins’ Past Life Melodies which features haunting indigenous-style chant and harmonic overtone singing, and In Memorium from John Peterson’s Dreams & Visions, originally commissioned by Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir in 2011.
