The foundations of Sydney Male Choir’s 2013 Centenary Tour of Europe will be laid at a landmark concert at City Recital Hall Angel Place.
Led by Music Director, composer and conductor Dr Houston Dunleavy, the choir’s 60 singers will present a full-length preview of their upcoming tour of the UK and France.
The 99 Not Out! concert will feature all-time favourites from the choir’s near-100-year history plus new Australian compositions that will make their international debut on the European Tour.
“The repertoire for the City Recital Hall Angel Place concert will showcase the musicianship and dedication of a premier Australian male choir that has proved itself to be one of the world’s best,” said Dr Dunleavy. “It will contrast some of the songs our audiences have come to love with marvellous new music by Australian composers.”
“While the tenderness of Danny Boy brings people close to tears, they will also be moved by Over the Quiet Waters, written by Australian composer Horace Keats in honour of his elder son Russell, who was killed in action aboard H.M.A.S. Canberra in 1942. This arrangement was completed especially for the Sydney Male Choir by the composer’s younger son, Brennan Keats.”
“We are really looking forward to taking to Europe Blue Australian Skies, a haunting work by Australian composer and conductor Stephen Leek. It conjures up the outback so well and was commissioned by the choir to mark the retirement of its longtime music director, maestro Alan Thrift.”
