Event Details
Star trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger is the leading man, literarily, in a new concerto inspired by the theatre and the movies.
In Brett Dean's trumpet concerto, the soloist plays all the parts from his position downstage centre. His first scene is the 'Fall of a Superhero' and the music takes its lead from movie soundtracks. His second scene is a classic soliloquy. The finale is inspired by a moment of madness from Chaplin's Modern Times.
In a rare treat, the composer is conducting, and he has framed Dramatis Personæ with music by Sibelius. The Historic Scenes (Wed & Thurs only) are early Sibelius (think Finlandia). Then, in the Third Symphony, he enters a new creative phase with music that's lithe and lean. Sibelius put it this way: 'While other composers serve gaudy cocktails, I offer the world cold, clear water.' Water, you could add, with the potency of vodka!
Featured non-Australian music: Sibelius
