Of all the Beethoven symphonies the Seventh is the most thrilling. In 1812 it was described as a wild orgy of sound and two centuries later it still has a vitality that will leave you wanting an encore. Immerse yourself in the obsessive, hypnotic rhythms and inexorable power of this awesome symphony.

Hear the Australian premiere of James Macmillan’s Percussion Concerto No.2. Soloist Claire Edwardes has long thought that his popular Veni, Veni Emmanuel is the best percussion concerto in the repertoire. His equally exciting second concerto has been compared to New York at rush hour – all colour and energy – and it’s a workout for soloist and orchestra, arriving at a transcendent finale as a glorious chorale tune “emerges from the fray”.
Wednesday’s concert begins with Engelsflügel (Wings of Angels), a hushed and introspective piece written for the SSO by Artist in Residence Brett Dean.
