Spence - MacDonald Duo; Gilded

  • Date: Tuesday, 29 January 2013, 8pm
  • Venue: The Ellington Jazz Club — 191 Beaufort Street, Northbridge, Perth, WA

Event Details

Alister Spence (Australia) piano, Raymond MacDonald (Scotland) alto/soprano sax

This duo dives joyfully headlong into open improvisation and realtime composition. Theirs is a musical universe where beauty and tension, simplicity and density happily co-exist.

Spence and MacDonald have developed a friendship and mutual admiration over the last 10 years, collaborating on projects including the Raymond MacDonald International Big Band, Tokyo 2008, featuring Satoko Fujii, Jim O’Rourke, Michiyo Yagi (‘an unqualified success’ The WIRE U.K.), and Alister Spence Quartet (Europe tours 2009, 2011).

Raymond is no stranger to European audiences, working regularly with many pioneers in improvisation, including Marilyn Crispell, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, George Lewis, Barry Guy, Keith Tippet and Axel Dorner. He is a founding member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra.

Alister, well-known for his work with the Alister Spence Trio, Clarion Fracture Zone, Wanderlust and The Australian Art Orchestra, has also performed with improvisation luminaries such as: Satoko Fujii, Natsuki Tamura, Barre Phillips, Myra Melford, Tony Buck, Chris Abrahams and Mike Majkowski.

Gilded: Matt Rosner guitar/field recordings, Adam Trainer piano/percussion.

Gilded is a new, beguiling and often beautiful musical project exploring texture and dislocated melody. Matt Rösner based in Myalup is arguably one of Western Australia’s most renowned experimental musicians. He has released music on labels as diverse as Room40, 12K, Apestaartje, Meupe and Miatera.

Adam Trainer was a founding member of Perth post-rock outfit Radarmaker, and has also played in projects such as Polaroid Ghost and the Ghost of 29 Megacycles. He has released music on labels such as hellosQuare, New Weird Australia, Phantom Channel and Feral Media.
