Event Details

Interconnecting cultural landscapes and relationships through sound. From a beautiful island nation just east from here comes one of Australasia’s finest ensembles, NZTrio. Known for their bold programming and engaging personalities, this time NZTrio casts the net over the East and hauls in a diverse collection of works from around the Pacific region.

East from Here presents sounds of memory-invoked moods from a child of China, one Aussie’s fascination with a hummingbird’s heartbeats, a flicker of Mozart by a self-proclaimed Taiwanese ‘queen of the night wannabe’, the elimination of all things by the flow of an Indonesian stream, and playfully risky New Zealand inspired rhythms from two of NZ’s best.

Claire Cowan (NZ; b. 1983) Subtle Dances – 10’ (NZTrio and Chamber Music NZ co-commission 2013)
Stuart Greenbaum (Australia; b. 1966) 800 million heartbeats – 8'
Zhou Long (China/USA; b. 1953) Spirit of Chimes – 12'
Yu-Hui Chang (Taiwan; b. 1970) Flicker – 3'

INTERVAL

Gao Ping (China/NZ; b. 1970) Su Xie Si Ti (Four Sketches) – 10’ (NZTrio commission, 2009)
Wayan Yudane (Indonesia/NZ; b. 1964) Entering the stream – 10’
John Psathas (NZ; b. 1966) Island Songs – 13’
