Event Details

Contemporary music and art magazine World’s Only and Kings Cross gallery space Alaska Projects come together again in the fourth free concert in the MUSICAL ALASKA series, Intimate Decisions – the first to feature both inter-state and international artists including the enigmatic Berlin-based violist, OOi.

Born in Australia and raised musically in Berlin, OOi is a musical chameleon. Taking the viola out of the orchestra and into a new space influenced by performance art and experimental film, she combines disciplines flawlessly to create an engaging audiovisual experience. MUSICAL ALASKA no. 4 will feature OOi both as a soloist and member of Melbourne-based Quartet2100, alongside Natasha Conrau (violin), Daniel Lopez (violin) and Eleanor Streatfeild (cello).

Returning to Australia for a limited series of concerts in Sydney and Melbourne fresh from studies with the Kronos Quartet and European tours with Christina Vantzou’s Little Prism Ensemble, Phia and Amanda Palmer, OOi will be performing Intimate Decisions by Australian composer Brett Dean, Hora Lunga by Gyorgy Ligeti and Candenza per Solo Viola by Krysztof Penderecki alongside video installations created and inspired by the works. With Quartet2100, OOi will perform Phillip Glass’s String Quartet no. 5 and a new work by Melbourne composer Lisa Ilean titled Stolen Air, commissioned by the group.

Featured non-Australian music: Ligeti, Penderecki, Glass
