Event Details
Internationally-acclaimed piano virtuoso, Zubin Kanga, returns to Australia for a national tour, performing DARK TWIN: music of mystery and multiplicity for piano and multimedia. Electronics, computer interaction and film combine to create multiple personalities, malevolent doppelgängers and menacing landscapes around the solo pianist. DARK TWIN features new works by three leading Australian composers – Julian Day, Daniel Blinkhorn and Cat Hope – each with vastly different styles and technological approaches: from lo-fi tools such as portable radios, to complex video and surround sound interacting with the pianist.
The program also features works by major composers from Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia and the USA, each working at the cutting edge of innovation in the interaction between technology and live musicians. Whether duetting with an artificially intelligent system, playing through an avatar, creating massive walls of warped piano sounds or grooving within an invisible piano ensemble, the works explode any preconceptions of what is possible in a ‘solo’ piano recital.
Featured non-Australian music: Piano Hero by Stefan Prins, Transit by Michel van der Aa, Piano Counterpoint by Steve Reich arr. Vincent Corver
