Event Details

The fourth Saturday program of the Australia Ensemble @UNSW’s 2014 concerts brings together, from modern Australia and what was nineteenth century Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic), two works in which instrumental song is dispensed as freely and generously as anyone could wish. These works, in turn, flank two scores, again from Australia and the regions of Czech and Moravian culture, in which the voices of the expert chamber singers of Roland Peelman’s Song Company collaborate with instrumental sound.

Dvorak was, like Brahms, a composer whose chamber works occupy an exceptionally large proportion of his creative catalogue; and his A major Piano Quintet is one of the noblest, most assured, commanding and flawless items in that catalogue.

Martin Wesley-Smith’s db honours the memory and achievement of one of the important figures of Australia’s musical efflorescence of the last seventy years, the late Don Banks (hence the initials that form the title of this score), while affirming Wesley-Smith’s own high and individual talents.

The words ‘authorised reduction’ attached to the programmed scoring of Janacek’s characteristically playful, fresh and individual Children’s Rhymes (Rikadla) are an exact description of the status of the score prepared by the late Erwin Stein – an important figure in modern musical publishing – with the approval of Janacek himself; and the Australian composer Raffaele Marcellino’s Mrs Macquarie’s Cello has fun with the story of one of the known and named musical instruments of early colonial Sydney (another being Mrs Macarthur’s piano). The Song Company, Australia’s finest professional group of chamber singers, has a gift for light-hearted ensemble additional to its well-known prowess in vividly powerful music.

Guest artists: The Song Company, Roland Peelman (director)
