Event Details

Antarctica is a program of newly-composed works for piano and/or toy piano inspired by the landscapes and atmospheres of one of the most fascinating continents in the world. While Antarctica is considered the most inhospitable continent on the planet, all along its beauty and mystery have fascinated not only travellers, scientists and researchers but also painters, musicians and writers. The piano, and the clear, distinctive sound of two small toy pianos, accompanied by photographs by Geoff Paul (and associates) of the continent, will bring audiences to discover the southernmost place in the world.

The program will include music for piano and/or toy piano written especially for the project by composers Paolo Longo, Gian Paolo Luppi, Stefano Procaccioli, Francesco Schweizer and Antonio Giacometti (Italy); Paul Smith, Diana Blom and Nathan Wilson (Australia); Chris Adams (New Zealand); Mercedes Zavala (Spain); Sara Carvalho (Portugal).

This is Italian pianist Antonietta Loffredo’s third visit to Sydney to play programs of newly composed music for piano. In 2011 she performed 'Childhood in Music' and in 2012 'Shadows and Silhouette's – new piano music with a Western-Chinese confluence, with both programs released on CD by Wirripang Pty. Ltd. Loffredo has a special interest in new music and new techniques for the piano and toy piano.

Featured non-Australian music: Works by Sara Carvalho (Portugal); Mercedes Zavala (Spain); Chris Adams (New Zealand); Francesco Schweizer, Stefano Procaccioli, Paolo Longo, Gian Paolo Luppi, Antonio Giacometti (Italy)
