Adam Yee (b.1974) is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, where his principal study was oboe. As an undergraduate, he founded KleZeyn Theatre who produced his first three operas at the renowned experimental theatre space, La Mama. The composer Chris Dench has been a significant mentor since their meeting in 1993. Yee has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Libra Ensemble, both as an oboist and composer. He has also written several works for ELISION.
Yee has received a number of awards, including the 2MBS FM Young Composers' Award, the Nescafé Big Break, the University of Melbourne Dwight's Prize (Faculty of Education) and a Queen's Trust Travelling Scholarship. This last award enabled him to take private lessons with Michael Finnissy and Richard Barrett in December 2000.
Yee has been active in the field of music education since 1998, when he commenced teaching at Melbourne High School. In 2001 he was appointed the foundation Director of Music at Beth Rivkah Ladies' College in East St. Kilda. He is was the Director of Music at the King David School and a past President of the Association of Directors of Music in Independent Schools. He is currently a council member of the Victorian chapter of ASME.
In 2011, Yee completed a Masters at RMIT's Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory, where his research focus was algorithmic composition. He is currently a PhD student in the Monash University Faculty of Education, and his fifth opera Carmilla is received a full season at La Mama in May 2018 after sell-out workshop performances in 2016. His song 'Katun River Pt. IV' will also receive its premiere performance by Eidit Golder and Lotte-Betts Dean at the Melbourne Recital Centre in March 2018.
He is active in VCE Music assessing, and curriculum reviews and is a sought-after lecturer on a wide range of music education topics.
