Leah Blankendaal : Associate Artist

My practice is built on the idea of holding space: both for sound and with sound, for the listener and with the listener. There is a quiet love in holding space for those sharing an experience and I’m interested in that place of reverence.

Leah Blankendaal is internationally acclaimed for works that explore stasis, light and space. Focused body autonomy, gender and transformation, her language is "fractured and complexified" (Realtime) with a "peaceful understanding of ritual" (Glam Adelaide). Blankendaal's diverse practice spans concert music, installation and improvisation. At home as a performer and creator of experimental sound, Blankendaal has worked with leading ensembles such as Duo Alterity (USA) Tura New Music and STRUT Dance (WA), Soundstream (SA) and the Australian Art Orchestra (VIC). 2019 included engagements at the Australian International Computer Music Conference (VIC), Connecticut Summerfest (USA) and the UWA Wind Band; and performances at Make It Up Club (VIC) Experimental Music Night (SA), and praxis ARTSPACE (SA). Her work has toured Europe, South East Asia, USA and New Zealand.

Blankendaal has received multiple awards including the UWA Dorothea Agnus Memorial Prize, Soundstream Emerging Composer's Forum Prize, APRA AMCOS 2020 Art Music Fund Commission, the 2020 Peggy Glanville Hicks Commission, and the 2017 Australian Music Centre Classical: Next Fellowship.
