The 40-year-old AMC goes all digital

The 40-year-old AMC goes all digital

With the 40th birthday of the Australian Music Centre fast approaching, the AMC staff have recently embarked on a large-scale project to speed up digitising the Centre's collection of scores and other materials. The project received funding of $182,000 in the second half of 2013 from DEEWR (now the Federal Department of Education), enabling a significant increase in digital resources available through the AMC website.

With the ambitious target of 13,000 new digital objects by September, the project is now fully underway. We're pleased to have a great team, including some additional staff, working on digitising ever-increasing numbers of scores, images, audio, and publications of various kinds. Many of these materials can be accessed by the AMC's members as digital library loans, and, eventually, by all AMC customers as commercial downloads.

Since the AMC's relocation last May, our physical library collection has been held offsite in Balmain, and much to-ing and fro-ing takes place on a weekly basis to access the materials. Thanks to more and more materials becoming available digitally, we are looking forward to spending less time travelling over the course of this year.

This project sees the completion of the AMC's transition to the online business model we have worked so hard to achieve over many years. In the year of our 40th birthday, what better way to celebrate such a milestone?

On the 13th August 1974 a Certificate of Incorporation was issued to the 'Australia Music Centre' (later changed to our current name) as a company limited by guarantee. Names of subscribers attached to the formal documentation of incorporation were J.L.K. Sturman, Nathan Waks, Prudence Neidorf, John Day, and James Penberthy. While some of these have departed, we are pleased to enjoy a continuing relationship with Pru Neidorf and Nathan Waks as AMC supporters.

Even though the AMC did not commence operations until later in 1975, we plan to commence our celebrations of this milestone in August this year, with the Art Music Awards taking place in Melbourne on 26 August. More on that elsewhere, and more on our other celebrations into 2015 in the coming months.

John Davis is the CEO of the Australian Music Centre.
