New chamber works in the shakuhachi concert
Image: Andrew MacGregor The inaugural Shakuhachi Chamber Music Composition Competition concert will take place in Melbourne on Saturday, 13 December. The program consists of the winning entries from the competition together with works commissioned especially for the concert. These include Douglas Gibson's Essence (2nd prize) and commissions from Brenton Broadstock and Johanna Selleck. The winner of the first prize was Derrik Jordan (USA), while the third prize went to Satoru Ikeda (Japan). The audience will be casting its votes for the winner of the audience prize during the interval, and the winner will be announced at the end of the concert.
Douglas Gibson's prize-winning work for shakuhachi, guitar and string quartet will be performed by Anne Norman, Kanishka Karunaratne and the Silo String Quartet. Brenton Broadstock's These Terrestrial Commitments (2008) is scored for soprano (Merlyn Quaife), shakuhachi (Andrew MacGregor), piano (Stefan Cassomenos) and percussion (Eugene Ughetti). In Johanna Selleck's piece, Songs of the Earth and Sky (2008), Anne Norman's shakuhachi will be joined by Eugene Ughetti and Peter Neville of Speak Percussion.
