The Ian Potter Cultural Trust has announced the recipients of the final round of Ian Potter Music Commission Fellowships. The Fellowships go to Gordon Kerry (Victoria) in the Established Composer category ($80,000) and to Iain Grandage (WA) in the Emerging Composer category ($20,000). The awards give the recipients the opportunity to create a significant portfolio of work over the next two years. At the judges' recommendation and in recognition of the calibre of the field, an additional extraordinary grant of $8,000 was also awarded to Damien Ricketson (NSW) to help create a specific work for premiere at Sydney Festival 2010.

In keeping with the Trust's remit to support all sectors of the Arts, 2009 will be the last year of the Music Commissions. Selected from a record field of applications, the winners 'demonstrated exceptional artistic and musical ability and presented strong concepts with excellent opportunities for performance'. The panel of judges consisted of Elena Kats-Chernin, Richard Mills, John Hopkins and Barry Tuckwell.

'The criteria for this prize are precise and exacting and both winners responded to these criteria with proposals of exceptional standard, demonstrating imagination and genuine focus on creating works that will be played, listened to and appreciated over many years,' explained Richard Mills.

The Ian Potter Music Commissions 2009 Fellowships were presented at a special event at the Salon, Melbourne Recital Centre, on Thursday 1 October. The final year of the Music Commissions was celebrated with a performance of selected works composed by past Ian Potter Music Commissions Fellows including music by Richard Mills, Damian Barbeler and Liza Lim, performed by pianist Michael Kieran Harvey, soprano Merlyn Quaife, pianist Caroline Almonte, and a solo percussion piece by Anthony Pateras played by Vanessa Tomlinson.
