Work Overview

To a Chinese folk musician, melody is a starting point around which he weaves his own unique embellishments. In Mozartiana, Julian Yu borrows the freedom of the folk musician as he adopts favourite melodies from Mozart and interweaves them with Chinese melodies to create humorous and at times curious concoctions. There are four movements:

  1. Jubilation (xi yang-yang + Mozart's Sonata in C)
  2. Flower Drum (with Little Night Music)
  3. Trist (Julian Yu's melody + Mozart's Prelude and Fugue in C)
  4. Quodlibet (Chinese folk tunes + lot of Mozart's well know themes)

In Flower Drum, the second movement of Mozartiana, the Southern Chinese folk song Flower Drum (Hua Gu) revolves decoratively around a framework provided by the first movement of Mozart's A Little Night Music. These two melodies, contrasting and yet complementary, combine well. If you know both melodies you will enjoy the interplay between them; if you know only one, there is an element of surprise in store for you.
